St Gerard Catholic High School
Graduation Standards and Policies
Diploma Plan
- Every student at St. Gerard has the opportunity to choose either the Standard or the Distinguished Graduation Plan with the permission of their parents.
- The St. Gerard Standard Diploma is awarded to students who complete the TCCED Recommended Program (27 credits). This diploma represents the minimally acceptable program for admission to Texas public universities.
- The St. Gerard Distinguished Diploma is awarded to students who complete the TCCED Distinguished Achievement Program (28 credits).
- As a college preparatory school, St. Gerard students are expected to complete the requirements for either the Standard or the Distinguished Diploma. Students who cannot satisfy these requirements, however, may petition the administration for permission to complete the TCCED Minimum Program.
- High school credit for classes taken in middle school is granted at the sole discretion of the St. Gerard administration.
Advanced Measures and Dual Credit
- The St. Gerard curriculum takes precedence over dual credit courses even though St. Gerard supports and participates in the dual credit program. In other words, whenever St. Gerard offers a course, students must take that course even if there is an equivalent dual credit course available at an Alamo Community College. Exceptions to this policy are granted at the sole discretion of the St. Gerard administration.
- Students may not leave campus during the regular school day in order to attend dual credit courses. St. Gerard students have the option of taking dual credit classes online, during school with certain qualified teachers, or after school.
- Only legitimately academic dual credit courses count as advanced measures for the sake of the St. Gerard Distinguished Diploma. When in doubt, students should secure permission from the administration prior to enrolling in a dual credit course.
Physical Education and Fine Arts
- A balanced curriculum includes the standard academic subjects, physical education, and fine arts. For the sake of being able to have a balanced curriculum each year, St. Gerard students are strongly encouraged to earn at least 1 credit by participating in qualifying team sports.
- Participation in sports is recognized as an important experience and as a positive motivator for high school students. St. Gerard students are strongly encouraged to participate in at least one team sport.
Credit by Examination
- St. Gerard students may, with the permission of the administration, earn credit by challenging an appropriate exam. For example, a student may earn credit in Spanish I, II, or III by passing the final exam with an 80 or better.
